Scientists Simulate Volcano Eruption in Second Life to One Day Save Lives?

The scientific and simulation values of Second Life never seem to amaze me. The volcanic eruption took place at the Quantum Terra virtual sim. Now it is true that the effects of the below volcano eruption in are largely visual and dramatic but a scientifically accurate model could easily be developed using the physics in the virtual world of Second Life to provide scientists new information and study the raw power and force of a volcano eruption.

  1. Thanks for finding this. It is pretty neat. But I don’t think an accurate simulation of volcanic activity is possible right now. That would require SL to be able to accurately model fluids and under pressure and SL’s physics engine doesn’t appear up to that.

What would be really cool is to simulate the effects of different types of historical volcanic eruptions, say Pelee or Pompeii.

And this sort of thing might be useful for simulating responses to volcanic activity on the part of emergency providers.
