IBM Announces Corporate Versions of Second Life

IBM announced today that they will host private versions of Second Life for corporate use. This can be used for training, interactive communication among employees long distances apart, virtual simulations, design, and much more. The product will be launched in a few weeks. Maybe IBM can provide some much needed stability by hosting Second Life themselves. This could be a seriously important event.

    would this make sense ?

IBM did allready announce a product on the lotussphere this year:

    Lotus Sametime 3D

wich is based on opensim, where some developer of IBM are working for a while.

Maybe this is even a missinterpretation, it they will offer a “Second Life alike” system – based on opensim. THis would very much fit into their strategy, using opensource as a basis.

    cheers,
    Ralf

  2. @Ralf,
Thank you for your comment. I agree it is a little bit confusing. It looks to me like IBM has moved beyond Linden Lab and will be offering their own solution. Linden Lab and Second Life seem to be playing catchup and trying to offer a competing product.

  3. Heho,

i guess Lindens would rather buy LL of the petty cash. :-)

to be serious, they did allready show their announced opensim based product.

And there are IBM dev“s in the opensim project for a long while, and we see no change.

    cheers,
    Ralf
