Eddie the 4 year old in Second Life

So maybe you have heard of Eddie? Eddie the 4 year old in Second Life. No he isn’t a smart kid that stole his dad’s credit card and logged into this virtual world. Eddie is a program that supposidly has the mental reasoning abilities of a 4 year old.

There is a YouTube video supposidly demonstration this:

It looks to me like the program just tracks whoever is talking, says “Okay” alot, and then does a search for like sentence structures and by the nature of the question is able to perform a search and respond. This means that Eddie will only know what you tell him. And you can’t tell him too much or he won’t be able to respond to you. So you could say “The ball is red”. “What color is the ball?”. But anything more than that would be out. I don’t know if I qualify this as the reasoning ability of a 4 year old. Maybe a 4 year old parrot.

Looks like Eddie just failed a Sally-Ann test. Ha ha, Eddie. Ha ha.

*feels like an idiot for mocking a robot*
(Okay, I guess I am just permanently bitter at the thought of intelligence being measured by telepathic capabilities. There are Aspies out there who could objectively be considered brilliant yet are very poor at sensing another person’s mental or emotional state. Could we downgrade the whole keeping-track-of-other-beings’-minds thing to a splinter skill?)
