New Second Life Video & PDF – Plugins Coming Soon with Developer API

We have written before about watching YouTube videos in Second Life. But it has still been a hacked together solution limited by the support of only QuickTime in the Second Life Viewer.

Linden Lab today announced the LLMedia API. The LLMedia API allows developers to create third party plugins for the Second Life Viewer. There is a new wiki page which covers the Media Rendering Plugin Framework which should allow developers to utilize other media rendering engines to create plug-ins.

Hopefully you will soon see Flash Video, PDF, XML, Windows Media, Silverlight, DivX, and more in Second Life. Currently Second Life only supports Apple Quicktime with GStreamer, HTML, and JavaScript recently rolled out.
