I hope you had a happy Veterans Day. I spent mine camping outside with the family. We need to take this special time to remember the men and women who have sacrificed for our country. Second Life celebrated as well raising funds for Operation Uplink. Operation Uplink is a non-profit that provides phone cards for veterans and deployed military.

The events include a virtual Veterans Wall which accepts submissions of names of fallen soldiers. Veterans Day activities continue through November 14, 2009 in Second Life at the Point Harbor virtual sim in Second Life.

One interesting virtual education project is the Open University’s Innovative Experiment in Community. This virtual university is running several classes in the virtual world of Second Life. Long distance learning and community building are emphasized.

Open University is based in the United Kingdom and currently has 150,000 undergraduate and 30,000 postgraduate students enrolled in courses in the real world. The Second Life virtual campus is an extension of that.

In the below video we see an example of some virtual baby games in which a 3d woman visits her doctor, gets a virtual ultrasound, takex part in a virtual lamaze class and then gives birth to a 3d child. It is a water birth in a fountain with plants and flowers. I would not recommend that in real life but since it is a virtual birth and a 3d pregnancy it does not really matter.
