Second Life as a Therapeutic Tool
There is another and seldom discussed type of use for Second Life. That is the use of home bound or disabled individuals feeling normal again in the virtual world of Second Life. In this virtual world they can walk and run and jump again. Even dancing, riding a horse, or riding a bike is again possible. If you are unable to see the scenery whizzing by in real life how perfect would Second Life be to ease your social isolation from a disability or home bound illness? A growing number of people with disabilities and illnesses are finding Second Life as a way to stretch their social wings. The Washington Post is currently running an article about a few of these individuals and therapists are beginning to recommend Second Life to their patients. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention even has a virtual presence in Second Life along with the American Cancer Society and March of Dimes. It is so wonderful to see the creativity of others being used to treat and help people.
